Understanding Zombie Behavior
Not all zombies in 7 Days to Die are created equal. While every undead enemy follows a general pattern — detect player, pursue, attack — the details vary wildly between types. Understanding these differences is critical, especially during horde nights when multiple variants attack simultaneously.
Zombies are generally slower during the day and become significantly faster and more aggressive at night. Feral zombies (glowing red eyes) are always in their night-aggressive state regardless of time of day.
Standard Zombie Types
Walker (Basic Zombie)
The most common enemy in the game. Walkers are slow, have moderate health, and deal low damage. They're the bread and butter of early game encounters.
- Threat Level: Low
- Best Strategy: Headshots with any weapon. Easy to kite solo. Dangerous only in large groups.
Crawler
Crawlers are zombies that move along the ground on all fours — or with missing limbs. Their low profile makes them easy to miss when you're focused on standing targets.
- Threat Level: Low-Medium
- Best Strategy: Watch your feet. Use a melee weapon or shotgun at close range. Wooden spikes are very effective against crawlers.
Feral Zombie
Ferals are the regular zombie types in a supercharged state — faster, tougher, and more aggressive. They can appear as feral walkers, nurses, or other variants.
- Threat Level: High
- Best Strategy: Prioritize these over regular zombies. Use mid-range weapons like rifles or shotguns. Don't let them close distance.
Special Infected Zombie Types
Bloated Walker (Bloater)
Large, bloated zombies that explode in a cloud of toxic gas when killed at close range. The gas deals poison damage and persists for several seconds.
- Threat Level: Medium-High
- Best Strategy: Kill at range. If you must engage in melee, back away immediately after landing the killing blow. Keep Antibiotics in your inventory.
Spider Zombie
One of the most unsettling enemies in the game. Spider zombies move on all fours rapidly and can climb walls — bypassing many conventional base defenses.
- Threat Level: High
- Best Strategy: Don't rely on wall height as your only defense. Use spikes at the base of walls. Shotguns work well in close quarters.
Demolisher
The Demolisher is a heavily armored, massive zombie introduced in later game days and horde nights. It carries an explosive payload strapped to its chest and deals catastrophic structural damage to bases.
- Threat Level: Very High
- Best Strategy: Shoot the red explosive barrel on its chest to detonate it prematurely — but make sure you're at a safe distance. Armor-piercing rounds are effective. Prioritize Demolishers above all other targets during horde night.
Zombie Vulture
Airborne threats that swoop down to attack players from above. They often appear in groups and can interrupt looting runs with little warning.
- Threat Level: Medium
- Best Strategy: Keep an eye on the sky. Rifles or bows work well. They often appear near decayed buildings and in the Wasteland biome.

General Combat Tips
- Always aim for the head — headshots deal bonus damage to all zombie types.
- Use Stamina wisely in melee; running out mid-fight is lethal.
- Carry Bandages, First Aid Kits, and Antibiotics on every run.
- Light sources attract zombies at night — use them cautiously outside your base.
Knowing what you're up against before each encounter gives you a massive tactical advantage. Study these enemy types, prepare accordingly, and the horde won't stand a chance.
